As a local creative, this platform has been developed to help service you and your business.

We understand how challenging it can be to manage and build a sustainable creative business. It is really tough to manage it all as a modern creative, gaining more exposure and affordable opportunities to sell your items and art. In the digital world, most of the creative ecommerce sites are now flooded with loads of competition and loads of inauthentic, mass produced art and items, and to boot, managing online sites and stores is incredibly time consuming which takes you away from creating.

This is where we come in.

The hub & HQ, Marrickville, NSW, Australia

“We didn’t just want to recreate a retail shop or a gallery or an events space. We wanted to create a hub. A place where everyone can experience and explore creativity in various forms and where we celebrate people. A place where we get to know more of the story behind the creators and the process. A place to experience and explore tech and traditional art forms. We wanted to create a collective, for it to be eclectic and always interesting. So this is the Hypmotive hub, where you can shop, meet, hang & discover. It’s your hub.”

There’s something beautiful about being involved in artisan markets Sydney and beyond. It’s about creating a vibrant and active community celebrating creativity and talent through beautiful handmade in-store and online gifts.

Saturday the 18th of March 2017, we had our open day celebrations.

In the afternoon, we had a very cool and talented young lady come and join in on the celebrations, Kacey Blakeney, with Aunty Michelle and Terry Cutcliffe.

We acknowledge that the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants of the nation and the traditional custodians of the land.

We also acknowledge that the prior ownership of this area of land in Marrickville, New South Wales, where we live and operate from, is by the Cadigal people of the Eora nation who were dispossessed by European invasion more than two hundred years ago.

Kacey, very kindly, was present with us to share an acknowledgement of country for us.

We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to Kacey Blakeney for your presence and acknowledgement, to Michelle Blakeney for your support and presence, and to Terry Cutcliffe for facilitating this poignant acknowledgement.

Hi, we’re the Russo’s!

We decided back in 2016 to make a change in life. To do more work in a heart-led and centered practice. With a strong desire for the platform to be an inspiring community of like minded, creative people, we took action and created Hypmotive. Hypmotive has been developed to service the creative community and to fulfill our own desire to live a more creatively rich life, full of exploration, self expression and connection.

Where it all began for us can be read in more detail here

Our Vision

“This talisman symbolically represents Renee and Jake’s unique vision and talents which beautifully complement each other.

It tells a visual story of their dream and goals for HYPMOTIVE.

The work, born of consultation, depicts past and present creative traditions, co-operation, heart centered practices, finding balance between the intuitive and practical aspects of creating their business.

The various elements are personal to the owners of the talisman.

The artwork itself is a focal point in the space where it ‘lives’:

A presence and reminder of the nature of creativity coming from heart and soul and finding its physical expression in the here and now.

It holds within its circle all the beauty, history, and service to others, Renee and Jake will generate through HYPMOTIVE, thereby promising great success.”

– Zabette Neumann, ZN Talisman ART.

Our Hypmotive talisman hanging up in the hub, if you can, swing by and we can take you through the elements!

Hypmotive's Creators
Renee Russo

the business side & hub keeper

Having spent the decade of her twenties as a self proclaimed “experience junkie” seeking adrenalin and testing her limits through a variety of activities such as solo sky diving, recreational mountain bike riding and wakeboarding, through to more chilled outdoor activities such as cruising around on her longboard skatey with her dogs, she travelled with Jake to Europe, America, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, Fiji and Hong Kong to experience different cultures and to try and satisfy her sense of adventure.

Her work experience ranges from hospitality in the early days, where she worked at a cafe (and where she was introduced to Jake), serving coffees and waitressing, to entering the corporate world working as a customer service rep for an airlines loyalty program, before moving into her career in retail where she worked for 10 years in various roles from administration, packaging design, promotions and marketing, product development and buying. In her most recent corporate years, she was responsible to deliver new product development from strategic range development, through to launch on shelf. This is where she developed an admiration for the creative process of development and the global connectivity of the world we live in.

Having resigned after 10 years working for the one retail company, her focus and energy is now full time on fulfilling Hypmotive’s purpose.

How she practices creativity:

“Having a love for the whole process of development, I do enjoy mindfully applying what I have defined as fundamental steps to create something into the physical. From that first flicker of an idea right through to having a finished product in front of you and where you take it next. I really resonate with how Steve Jobs described creativity, in that creativity is connecting things. I enjoy styling for photos and at times, drawing our dogs. My drawings are amateur at best, but I enjoy the process and the “films” that play in my imagination when I think about them doing these things. It is a comedically satisfying, free form of entertainment. Other creative pursuits vary and at this moment in time, most of my creative expression is being poured into Hypmotive, how the business is structured to add value in various forms and what we present.”

Jake Russo

the artist & designer

He has always been an imaginative person and has always have been a tinkerer, spending endless hours in his pop’s shed as a young kid, building imaginary machinery out of junk, mechanical parts.

Fast forward to now, his main desire is to reconnect with his creative-self to be more aligned with the lifestyle he desires to move forward with.

His focus has been his career over the past 10 years which is within a commercial industry. Through this time, he went through a stint of disconnection. He spent his spare time watching tv shows of people creating and he felt that he had lost the connection with who he was and that he had lost the connection on how to express himself artistically.

Because of this, over the years, he started to dabble again in painting and restorations. Through this discovery and experiments with artistic forms of creativity, he has felt more inspired and excited about life.

He started his career in a drafting apprenticeship at an electrical consulting firm. He then went on a career break for a year, moving into a role as a store man in a lighting shop where he was introduced to hands-on electrical work (and introduced to Renee). Then moving to a network provider, wiring cables in houses and apartment blocks. He then returned into a drafting corporate role, which has developed into a design engineering position. He has been within the same company for 13 years and now manages a team of designers, finding enjoyment in teaching and passing on knowledge he has gained over the years.

How he practices creativity:

“I like taking something that is undesirable or unrelated and making it something that is desirable. I like seeing the transformation and moving through this process.

I enjoy repurposing furniture and lighting. I am also currently in the process of building a vintage motorcycle.

I have a desire to learn more creative skills to broaden my scope on what I can create and to work alongside other creatives to exchange ideas and understand different concepts.”
